United axed Solskjaer last weekend, relieving the 48-year-old of his duties following a dire 4-1 defeat away at Watford.
And, on Thursday, it emerged the Red Devils were primed to bring in Rangnick as his temporary replacement.
United want the German to steady the ship until the end of the campaign, where they’re expected to pursue Erik ten Hag or Mauricio Pochettino.
But the German reportedly wants assurances over the power he’d have in terms of both player recruitment and development.
Rangnick doesn’t want to move to United merely to keep the seat warm for a successor. Instead, he wants a ‘serious longer-term project’.
United have placed Michael Carrick in caretaker charge for the time being, with the retired midfielder previously working as a coach under Solskjaer.
He oversaw the weekend’s 2-0 victory over Villarreal, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho both on target.
And Carrick, speaking ahead of United’s showdown with Chelsea on Sunday, was coy on Rangnick’s imminent move.
